IT SEEMS like just yesterday that this city of more than 300 years of history stood as the living example epitomizing Murphy’s Law. With perfect conditions in place it could not even come a respectable second and it was only competing with itself!!

The city has the dubious distinction of being the city to have lost out on its capital status, and to compliment that blow, the city saw the failure of infrastructure, power, agriculture and some of the largest most ambitious industrial projects year after year.
For any other city to self destruct and be consumed would have been the most probable way of succumbing to such concentrated and absolute reign of bad luck and neglect.

Alas, Nagpur is a city of some very stubborn people, who by the sheer love for their city and their faith in its true position on the Indian map, have turned the tables on Murphy himself!! In less than 3 years it is the hottest, most sought after destination in the whole of India, surpassing the traditional favorites of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune, and keeping at bay the presently active rivals formed by Kolkatta, Chennai and Chandigarh.

It is thus hardly surprising that every individual or company of any standing wants to father this turnaround, a tale which could possibly find mention in management studies. The city always had everything, being the 9th, significantly high urban population, educated manpower, social infrastructure, political stability, one of the highest number of professional colleges to boast of and geographic location nothing short of a fairytale, the list of these perfects is long.

Only some out of this list were available in some of the cities which have risen to compete with the likes of Delhi and Mumbai in the last 2 decades, primarily’ fueled by the success of IT sector. The turning point came with the advent of a couple of real estate developers who believed in the city more than the market would and the timely breakthrough for the decade old MIHAN project, changed the course of the tide and catapulted the city onto everyone’s radar.

Slowly and very steadily in the last 3 years almost all of the large IT companies like Satyam, L&T Infotech, Shapoorjee Group, Dell and have taken up huge lands in MIHAN for alternate facilities outside the conventional silicon zones. Anticipating the huge demand for the allied industries for this resurgence leading groups like DLF, Matyas, Raheja, Kalpatru, Mantri and unity to name just a few of the biggest names, are coming up with some very large residential projects. The hotel industry never to be shy from a good opportunity has also moved very fast with projects for almost all the real brands set to start in the next 3 years, all from Taj to Marriot and Sun and Sand to Radisson will be here.

The government has also contributed to the foundation for this success story by improving the roads, air connectivity, power situation partly and the basic infrastructure like public trans-portation, water, medical facilities etc. for the city making it even more inviting for these mega investments.

Using its absolute range of positives resources the city is destined to be the hub for IT, industry, logistics and allied areas of housing, retail, entertainment and hospitality. Which brings us to the conclusion that the quagmire was always in the timing and never in the fundamentals of the city. Now that even the failures having started to perform like the Philharmonic Orchetra, Nagpur has finally arrived and is here to stay and take its long due and deserving place under the sun as the heart, soul and pride of India.
